Health Policy & Advocacy Update:

In July of 2021, Ohio governor Mike DeWine signed the NLC into law in the state of Ohio. Once, enacted, Ohio became the 38th state to join the compact. The Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC), allows nurses from other compact states to work in the state of Ohio if they hold a multi state license, and it allows nurses in the state of Ohio to obtain a multi state licensure to work in other compact states. In the past, Ohio has been against joining the compact due to possible risks of public safety. Senator Kristina Roegner stated that becoming a compact state will help bring nurses from other states to gain experience that they "may not find in other states." The NLC will make it easier for Ohio nurses to move between states and take travel positions, as long as those states are a part of the compact. Nurses with a multi state license will also only have to renew the one license rather than multiple licenses in order to practice in other states.

This law took effect on January 1, 2023.
